WSCFF Holds 80th Annual Convention
The WSCFF 80th Annual Convention was held in Renton, June 18 – 20; and 252 delegates and 22 alternates, democratically selected by members of IAFF affiliates, met to review WSCFF finances, adopt a budget for 2020, set per capita dues, elect officers, discuss legislation, endorse IAFF candidates, and address relevant occupational issues.
The body considered and adopted 24 resolutions ranging from presumptive coverage for heart disease to model wildfire and all-hazards mobilization contract language. Resolutions impacting per capita will result in a slight increase from 24.14 to 24.48 per member per month for fiscal year 2020, beginning in September 2019. The delegates also adopted a resolution that creates a WSCFF Retiree Association. All 2019 adopted resolutions are available on WSCFF.org.
Elections were held for WSCFF Executive Board members representing even-numbered WSCFF Districts, and the following representatives were re-elected by acclamation: Jeff Wainwright, District 2; Mike Westland, District 4; Ryan Mudie, District 6; Bill Mack, District 8; and Dean Shelton, District 10. Shelton was also re-elected WSCFF Vice-President. Greg Markley was re-elected WSCFF Secretary/Treasurer, and Rich Kittinger was re-elected WSCFF Trustee.
In addition to addressing important issues, the assembled delegates and their guests took time to socialize with a special event at the Museum of Flight Tuesday night and to celebrate and recognize significant milestones at the banquet on Wednesday evening. Two new locals, IAFF 5180 Kittitas County Fire District #7 and IAFF 5212 South Whidbey Fire Fighters, were welcomed. Three locals celebrated 50 years of WSCFF affiliation: IAFF 1862 Montesano, IAFF 1892 Pullman, and IAFF 1919 Cheney. IAFF 3520 East Pierce Professional Fire Fighters celebrated 25 years of affiliation. We thanked the members of KISW morning show, led by BJ Shea and Steve Migs, for their work in encouraging contributions to our Operation Warm program. In five years, they have raised nearly $135,000. We recognized Representative Beth Doglio, 22nd Legislative District, with the Jack Waller Honorary Firefighter Award. And Norm Golden, IAFF Local 1352, was presented the Ricky J. Walsh Fully Involved Award.
The WSCFF 81st Annual Convention will be held next June in Wenatchee, WA, and we look forward to seeing you there! If you are interested in learning more about what goes on at Convention, attend your local union meeting and talk to your local leaders.
