Mike Cooper, August 20, 2026

With heavy hearts the WSCFF and IAFF Local 1760 Shoreline report the death of Mike Cooper on August 20, 2026. Brother Cooper passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, after an extended illness.

Mike was raised as a son of a firefighter, and he went on to serve the Shoreline community as a member of the Shoreline Fire Department for over 30 years. Mike rose through the ranks to lieutenant and served as the President of IAFF Local 1760 for many terms. Upon retirement, Mike was recognized as President Emeritus of Local 1760.

In addition to his fire service career, Mike served as mayor of Edmonds, Snohomish City Council member, Elma City Council member and he represented the people of Washington’s 21st Legislative District in the Washington State House of Representatives from 1997-2008.

Mike was a champion for working families and the fire service. As a State Representative, he worked to reduce the LEOFF 2 retirement age to 53, expand presumptive coverage for firefighters and emergency medical personnel, and worked to pass I-790 and implement of the LEOFF Plan 2 Governance Board.

In 2010, Mike was awarded the Walt Lambert Labor Leader Award by the Washington State Council of Fire Fighters. In 2023, he was elected to the WSCFF Retirees Association Board.

Mike’s love of politics and service to others was unmatched and his energy, experience and knowledge was second to none He was a champion for not only firefighters but all workers in the state of Washington. He will be deeply missed.
