8th District Report

Dean Shelton, WSCFF Vice President, WSCFF 8th District Representative

Report from the “Mighty” 8th

The WSCFF 8th District has been extremely busy over the past several months. Members and leadership have attended committed and sacrificed their own personal time for the betterment of not only their locals but also their communities.

Sadness also struck the 8th District recently with the passing of former IAFF Local 106 Member Shaun Ward.  Shawn was originally a local leader in the North Whatcom IAFF Local prior to merging with IAFF Local 106.  Shaun promoted to Division Chief and out of the local shortly after the merge.  Sadly, Shaun passed from a duty related occupational cancer.  Please keep Shawn’s family and Local 106 in your thoughts.

On a more positive note, members from the 8th have truly been busy.  Recently, members have attended the following events and programs: IAFF-WSCFF Jointly Sponsored Educational Seminar, IAFF 7th District Fire Ops, IAFF Communications Academy, IAFF 7th District New Member Conference and of course we have members participating in the IAFF 7th District Executive Leadership Program.

In addition, as we continue to see federal programs impacting our members be a concern.  8th District members have been active in advocating politically with their local, state and federal elected officials to discuss those issues that may have impacts on them back home.  FEMA, Federal Grants, Medicare, NFA to just name a few.

In addition to meeting with elected officials, members of the 8th also recently attended the Skagit County Democrats Annual Gala.  This fundraiser is an excellent opportunity for members to talk and discuss our issues on a less formal manner with both elected as well as those seeking office.  The “gala” was well attended and a good time was had by all.

In closing, Local 3219 is a week away from hosting the WSCFF Annual Convention in Marysville.  The work done by so many to bring such an amazing event is no small feat. I am confident that all that work will pay off and all those attending will enjoy this year’s venue.

The Summer started early as temperatures continue to rise, wildfire season is upon us and hope that ALL members and communities stay safe in 2025.
