We celebrate first-time attendees at this year’s Kelly L. Fox Legislative Conference, proving that advocacy begins now! As more than 200 WSCFF members rallied to support fire fighter rights in Washington State on February 5 – meeting with elected officials and making their voices heard – we caught up with two first time attendees, to hear about their experience and explore why advocacy is essential throughout a fire fighter’s career.
Meet Anthony Thelen, L3520 East Pierce

What were you looking forward to at your first Legislative Conference?
“I was hoping to learn more about the legislative process, how we as a union go about business, and what I can do to give back. I also wanted to meet our Executive Board and put faces to the names.”
Why do you think it’s important for fire fighters to be involved in political advocacy?
“We have a voice. Everything we’ve earned has come through this process. To maintain and improve, we need to stay involved.”
Why would you recommend people attend a Legislative Conference?
“I highly recommend people who care about their future and the well-being of our brothers and sisters attend. Not only does the Legislative Conference give insight into what our Executive Board is doing, but it also gives you a chance to be heard.”
Meet River Perea, L1296 Kennewick

What made you want to attend the Legislative Conference?
“I’ve been getting involved with the union over the past year or so, attending the Educational Seminar, the IAFF 7th District New Member Conference, and the WSCFF Annual Convention. I want to learn more about the union and stay involved because I think it’s really important. What happens here affects not just our union but fire fighters across the state. It’s crucial to make sure these issues are heard by our representatives and senators so they understand our perspective as fire fighters and can help make the changes we need.”
What tips would you give to someone who’s never been to a Legislative Conference before?
“Get as involved as you can! I think I could keep working on that myself—reading bills more thoroughly before attending, understanding the backstory of why we’re pushing for certain things. Get involved: watch, listen, and learn everything you can while you’re here. It’s really important to be here. Seeing elected representatives and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how government works. Also, understanding how we can influence change in the fire service… not just for fire fighters, but for the communities we serve.”
Why is it important for fire fighters to be involved in political action?
“If you’re asking for change, if you want change, you have to be part of that change. Be involved. Be involved in your union, be involved in your legislative efforts. It makes you a better union member and benefits you and your community.”
The WSCFF strongly encourages anyone interested in political action to contact your local leaders or your WSCFF District Representative. Find weekly 2025 Legislative Session reports here. Learn about the WSCFF Legislative Committee here.
