Craig Becker, WSCFF 7th District Representative
Members of the “Mini 7th” have been actively involved in a variety of initiatives throughout 2026. The membership actively participated in the WSCFF Kelly L. Fox Legislative Conference in Olympia, meeting with our representatives to address our key issues, including presumptive heart disease and longer EMT recertification periods. Several members attended the IAFF Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., where they advocated for cancer research, collective bargaining for all, and other key issues affecting our profession. Shortly thereafter, district members attended the IAFF’s inaugural Strive for Excellence Summit, which was very well received. The event offered valuable educational opportunities, including Union 101, leadership and command-level courses, and hands-on training. Furthermore, the 7th actively participated in the IAFF-WSCFF Jointly Sponsored Educational Seminar, which offered courses benefiting both new and experienced members.
Within the 7th District, Local 437 Kitsap County organized a mini-educational event for aspiring labor leaders. Efforts like these provide a strong foundation for members to better understand and engage in the labor movement, ultimately strengthening our collective voice and benefiting all members.
Our district continues to extend its benevolence to both its members and the communities we serve. Local 2032 East Jefferson once again hosted a successful pancake breakfast to raise funds for its benevolent fund. In addition, the Kitsap Fire Fighters Benevolent Fund will host its first annual golf tournament on August 31 to support its joint benevolent fund, which serves all locals in Kitsap County.
As we know, presumptive diseases continue to affect our profession at an increasing rate. We strongly encourage all members to be proactive by undergoing regular medical screenings. The 7th District has provided four opportunities for members to access Galleri cancer screening in 2026 and will continue to expand access as needed. This is one of several tools available to help members take a proactive approach to their long-term health.
In closing, the continued engagement, education, and support shown by the members of the Mini 7th reflect the strength and commitment of our district. By staying involved, supporting one another, and prioritizing both advocacy and health, we are well-positioned to move forward together and continue making a positive impact on our members and the communities we serve.
